Every month I’ll highlight a comfy series with low stakes, calm vibes and people I wish I knew in real life. Slice-of-life comedies are a mainstay here in the Cozy Corner, and that’s because they give the warmest of warm fuzzies. This month’s pick, Play It Cool, Guys , is no exception! It’s the story of five friends from all walks of life who each have their own personalities and strengths, but have one fun thing in common: they’re prone to making silly mistakes! Opening Number It’s a bright and cheerful song for a bright and cheerful anime! "Warau na!" by syudou is the second opening song for the series that makes you want to bop your head to the beat. Just like the first opening sequence, we see some adorable teddy bears — clearly representing our new favorite cool guys — to set the tone for the warm and fluffy episode to come. We’re also treated to some classic awkward moments from our heroes, from Mima washing his face with his glasses on (my personal favorite) to a couple of harmless wardrobe malfunctions. Here's the Story Fate brings together five guys of different ages and personalities and turns them into the best of friends! There’s Hayate, a college student who went to an all-boys high school; Mima, who works hard at a PR firm; Shun, a high school student and athlete; Souma, who studies design in college; and Motoharu, a successful novelist and childhood friend of Mima. While they all share a habit of making the cutest mistakes, they each handle their goofs in their own ways. They get through life with smiles, friendship and embracing the little things that make them feel happy. Coziest Character Of all our guys, Souma is likely the one to make you smile the most, making him the coziest character of the series. When Souma makes a silly mistake, he doesn’t get embarrassed or put on an act to blow it off. He can’t help but laugh at himself every time! Souma tries to hide his sweet smile so he doesn’t look creepy, but that’s just not possible. The promising young designer is earnest and genuinely likable, and his smile is contagious. Ending Notes Snapshots of the friends’ everyday lives accompany a tender ending song sung by the cast. “Taisetsu” by PICG is a harmony of clear voices and soothing vibes. Is there anything this group of friends can’t do when they’re all together? Messing up (like forgetting your wallet or wearing mismatched socks) is just another chance to make one of those remarkable encounters happen. Days when nothing special happens are fun, too, just like Shun says. This anime is a lovely reminder that life is all about the connections we make to the world around us and the people we meet in it. Yeah, these guys are pretty cool.
