How Far Has Science Progressed in Dr. STONE?

Ever since he broke out of his stone imprisonment, Senku Ishigami has been very busy in Dr. STONE . It’s a good thing he kept his mind active and busy over the thousands of years he was stuck since he’s now able to utilize everything he knows in order to reintroduce this new world to science. Over the course of Dr. STONE , we’ve seen Senku find ways to craft all sorts of tools, technology, and experiments that have pushed society forward faster than anticipated. Let's take a look at some of the biggest scientific achievements throughout the Dr. STONE series so far.  NOTE: This article was originally written by Jared Clemons on October 21, 2019. It has been updated to include more of Senku's inventions. Soap Soap might seem like an odd choice given what can be done with science. Take a second to remember, though, that this world is starting over from scratch. There’s no amenities. Keeping up your personal hygiene is going to be something that will help in the long run. Maybe washing your hands will help protect you from a simple illness that you might contract from being out in nature all the time. You won’t be caked in dirt, mud, grime, or any other substance that water might not be able to take care of by itself. It’ll make you feel more like you have some level of comfort again, which in a world that has been retaken over by nature, is a luxury. Plus? Considering everyone else Senku encounters most likely doesn’t have soap, there’s a lot of smells going around that can be alleviated by soap.  Iron RELATED: How to Watch Dr. STONE in Order This is tied into a selection later on with its purpose in the show, but let’s look at this in a more generalized sense. Senku hasn’t made it so that he can make any kind of metal or found a process to make it easy to reproduce since he had to bribe the village with food to help him, but this is a good first step. Having the ability to create iron will expand upon what can be made and used. You can use it for building, protection, weaponry, storage, and so many other purposes. The problem comes with Senku’s means of production currently because it’s not the easiest thing to make at the moment. However, the fact that it can be made is a good step forward to recreating a modern society. Glass How often, when you’re watching a piece of media that’s set in a dystopia, post-apocalyptic world, or any world that doesn’t have the conveniences of modern technology, do you think, “How many of these people can’t see because they don’t have glasses?” Probably very rarely, if at all. It’s one of those aspects that usually isn’t addressed in those kinds of stories, but Dr. STONE actually makes you think about it. Senku finding a way to make glass helps him with several scientific endeavors by allowing him to make beakers and other glass equipment. It also lets him correct people’s eyesight as he did with Suika and Kinro. That’s a pretty important thing to do! Now folks who thought they had a strange incurable condition can have that fixed! It’s two big advancements for the price of one. Electricity RELATED: Dr. STONE Characters From Senku to Why-Man It may have been just a singular light bulb, but Senku has brought electricity back to Earth. Given his current setup and how it’s powered by magnets and a manual power generator, you’re probably not going to see streetlights and overpowering light displays anytime soon, but knowing that electricity is possible with the equipment they’ve made is a remarkable feat. Without the iron, this wouldn’t be possible, so this is a case of one recreation feeding itself into another to make more breakthroughs. The fact that they are able to create electricity means that this can be built upon further to try and potentially condense the process down so it’s not as time-consuming to light a single light bulb. Why stop at one, right? There may be a way to light up multiple light bulbs at the same time with their current method, which could lead to the Kingdom of Science being the brightest place on Earth. Sulfa Drugs Modern medicine! In a post-apocalyptic world! To understand how significant this is, sulfa drugs weren’t created until the 20th century. They’re less than 100 years old as of this article’s publication. Senku has literally expanded everyone’s life expectancy. No longer do they have to fear getting sick or think an illness will be the death of them. Sure, there’s going to be medical conditions that these drugs can’t treat, but it’s a testament to how much they’ll be able to help. Of course, given the dangerous nature it takes to acquire the materials to make them, it’s not like Senku has the means to mass-produce drugs at this point, but since he’s able to make them on a case-by-case basis, he’s a lifesaver. You can basically give him his medical doctorate now at this point, although I don’t know how many people would understand what that means thousands of years in the future. Automobile It might not be what you think when you picture a traditional automobile, but this mobile lab has helped the Kingdom of Science when they’re in a pinch. From helping provide supplies, which it’s usually packed full of, to mimicking a wild beast to fend off members of the Petrification Kingdom, this has been a big asset to have. Given its importance, it made sense to bring it along for their trip across the ocean to America, where it again has paid dividends. For now, there’s not a big need for more cars, although a few did help when Senku and crew had to move some mining deposits, but I’m sure at some point we’ll see more as Senku is able to revive more people. Camera Originally designed in a deal with Minami, it also allowed the scouting team a better way to detect where an oil field was, this very old-school camera, similar to the daguerreotype, did exactly what it was made to do. The Kingdom of Science was able to obtain many aerial shots of their surrounding area, which also allowed them to map it out better for easier exploration. One of the nice aspects of having this camera is it did allow for there to be a fun group shot of everyone in Season 3, and we got to see Senku pull off his best impersonation of Albert Einstein. Drones These aren’t the traditional drones you can buy at a store, that’s for sure, but for what Senku needed at the time, they are pretty much drones through and through. At first they were designed to help capture the petrification device from Kirisame as she would throw it before activating it. Through the use of creating drones, Senku was also able to put this work into creating RC cars and in general gave them the ability to create items that required smaller engines. Revival Fluid Machine RELATED: 10 Anime to Watch if You Like Fallout Perhaps the most important new advancement that Senku has made is when he was finally able to create a means to make revival fluid at any time and not have to rely on nature. This was one of the main goals within Season 3, and thanks to the platinum that was found on Treasure Island, Senku was able to get this set up to not only save his comrades who had been re-petrified, but to also further his goal to eventually save everyone on the planet. It’s a lofty goal for sure, but this is the first step to making that happen. Non-Perishable Food As the crew knew they were going to eventually embark on a grand adventure across the ocean, one thing that would be needed was supplies that could last for weeks on end. While they were able to eventually get the science working for long-lasting bread, it wasn’t exactly the most edible. Thanks in large part to Francois, they were able to finally make bread that would last throughout a lengthy trip, but was also good enough to eat. Can’t have your food rotting when you’re in the middle of the ocean with no alternative solutions after all. Radio You could look at this as a telephone, with how it’s set up and it rings when people chat with one another. Senku certainly designed the portable version to be kind of thought that way. When on these expeditions, it helps to be able to communicate with different members of the team and their radio system has helped tremendously in that aspect. They’ve also been able to create long range radio that can allow them to communicate with the Ishigami Village from much further away. The downside to this though, is that if there are others who have this technology, like Dr. Xeno, they can intercept anything that’s being broadcast. Radar/Sonar After creating a cathode ray tube, Senku was able to fashion a radar/sonar device to help them along in their journeys. With Ukyo’s expertise they’re able to use it effectively and it allows them to scan underwater to avoid any dangers that might befall them when out on the water. This becomes an important device later in Season 3 when it’s used to help them pinpoint where exactly Why-Man is and where the signal from this mysterious villain is coming from. Ships Smaller boats weren’t too difficult of a creation for this stone world, but in order to sail the oceans and find everything that would be needed for when the crew heads to space, they needed something a tad bigger. It took some trial and error, along with using a smaller model to help create the actual ship, but the Kingdom of Science was successful in creating their sea-faring ship, the Perseus . Not only was it able to take them to Treasure Island and the Petrification Kingdom, but also across the ocean to western America. Along with that, they were also able to convert it into an aircraft carrier in Season 4. Firearms RELATED: Building the Foundations of Fashion in Dr. STONE At one point in Season 3, Senku mentions that whenever science advances enough, eventually people are going to find a way to create weapons like this. While they had already created dynamite in the previous season, Senku upped the ante by making a makeshift pistol in order to help defend the Kingdom of Science against their adversaries on Treasure Island. Of course, little did they know that this was very primitive in comparison to when they landed in America and saw how far Dr. Xeno had progressed in regard to making advanced firearms. Planes While Senku and the Kingdom of Science might have thought they were on the cutting edge of technology in the stone world, they were in for a rude awakening when they landed in America and saw that airplanes were a thing again. Dr. Xeno had gone in a different direction than Senku, by finding ways to fortify his defenses through the use of firearms and also airplanes to gain an air advantage over anyone that could be seen as an enemy. The Kingdom of Science was able to commandeer a crashed plane from Dr. Xeno which let us see the first dog fight in thousands of years. Power Drill With Senku out of action after being shot, it was Chrome’s turn to showcase what he’s learned in his time under Senku. Although the folks from the modern era already had an idea of what he wanted to make, he comes up with a rudimentary hand-powered drill that helps the Kingdom of Science dig a hole to Dr. Xeno’s fortress in order to get the jump on him. It’s a good opportunity to see Chrome step up as a leader, but also as someone who can figure out things through the use of science thanks to all of the knowledge he’s been able to obtain throughout the series. Submarine A secret build that was kept under wraps until his fight with the Kingdom of Science, Dr. Xeno also had this up his sleeve as a countermeasure to Senku. This was a fully functional submarine that was able to maneuver through the Sacramento River undetected, but also able to carry numerous soldiers for Dr. Xeno and also ram the Perseus without doing much damage to itself. It is another example of how Dr. Xeno goes in a much more extreme direction than Senku, but also showcases just how much both Senku and Xeno are pushing forward science in a wide variety of ways.
