Isao Takahata-directed Anne of Green Gable Anime Compilation Movie Gets Revival Screenings

Revival screenings of anime movie Anne of Green Gables: Road to Green Gables , written and directed by Isao Takahata ( Grave of the Fireflies , Only Yesterday , Pom Poko ), will be held at 66 movie theaters in Japan for a limited time of two weeks starting May 30, 2025. The 100-minute film is a compilation of the first six episodes of the 50-episode TV anime adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic novel Anne of Green Gables . The main staff included legends in the history of Japanese animation, such as Isao Takahata (director), Hayao Miyazaki (scene setting and layout), Yoshifumi Kondo (animation director), and Masahiro Ioka (art director). This theatrical version was not officially released when it was re-edited in 1989 under the supervision of Takahata himself, but was released theatrically in July 2010 , 20 years later. These screenings are part of a revival screening project sponsored by Filmarks to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Nippon Animation, the company that produced the original TV anime. This year's screening will be further expanded in scale to also commemorate the 15th anniversary of the film's release.
