Lionsgate made some massive John Wick announcements during their CinemaCon presentation today, the biggest of which is that John Wick: Chapter 5 is officially happening.
Keanu Reeves will return to play John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 5, despite the character being killed off in the previous installment. John Wick, it seems, can never truly die.
Chad Stahelski will be back to direct Chapter 5.
Reeves will also return to the franchise to voice the character in a John Wick animated prequel movie, with Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: Rising) directing for Lionsgate.
Indiewire reports, “Expect the [animated] Wick movie to be as highly stylized, action-heavy, and aimed at mature audiences as any of the live-action films.”
“The untitled animated feature will flash back to before the events of the first John Wick movie from 2014 and will look at how Wick worked to complete the fabled “Impossible Task” that has been teased in the franchise,” Indiewire’s report further details. “It will depict the ordeal that required Wick to kill all of his rivals in one night, a task that won him his freedom from his obligation to the High Table and let him live with the love of his life, Helen.”
Vanessa Taylor (The Shape of Water) is writing the animated John Wick movie.
“In both animation and the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless,” Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson said in a statement. “And there is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the Impossible Task. Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.”
And that’s not even all, as Lionsgate also announced during CinemaCon today that the spinoff movie Caine is taking shape, with Donnie Yen directing the film as well as starring.
Donnie Yen will be playing the blind assassin he first played in John Wick: Chapter 4.
But first, the franchise’s first spinoff movie, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, will release in theaters June 6, 2025. Ana de Armas plays Eve Macarro in the upcoming film.
The growing John Wick Cinematic Universe also includes The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a spinoff television series that premiered on Peacock back in late 2023.
